11-year-old Bailey was surrendered by her owner for not using the litter box. This shy Bengal (or Bengal mix) is also declawed.
Inappropriate elimination is a common sequela in cats that have been declawed. They can associate the litter box with pain and therefore avoid it. Many declawed cats also have bone remnants left behind which can be painful to walk on. Even without the fragments, walking can be uncomfortable for these cats because the procedure also removes a ligament causing the toes to be in an unnatural position resulting in “hammer toe.”
Bailey has been put on a medication for pain which concurrently also helps to relax her. So far she has been using the box with us.
She still needs more evaluation before she is ready for a new home and we hope that we can make her comfortable and get her to that point.
